The
United Kingdom has donated GBP 25,000 to support CMS Marine
turtle conservation in the Indian Ocean and South-East
Asia. The UK Global Wildlife Division of the Department
for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) and UNEP/CMS
signed an Agreement to this end in March 2003. Arnulf
Müller-Helmbrecht, CMS Executive Secretary, and Steve
Lee-Bapty, Head of the Global Wildlife Division, UK DEFRA,
(pictured right) are convinced that the Agreement will
give additional impetus to the initial phase of the implementation
of the IOSEA MOU.
-
- GBP 15,000 are planned to be used for the implementation
of several activities envisaged by the Conservation and
Management Plan (CMP) attached to the MOU. These include
mainly the development of a web site and other information
material concerning the MOU, further development of an
electronic template for national reports from Signatory
States. The production of a hardcopy newsletter and translation
of the MOU and CMP are also part of the Agreement..
-
- GBP 10,000 are intended to support a project aimed
at enhancing conservation of Marine turtles in Kenya. The
Kenya Sea Turtle Conservation Committee (KESCOM),
an animal welfare association that acts as the national
co-ordinating body for sea turtle conservation in Kenya,
will implement the project. The initiative aims at intensifying
research and monitoring activities on the status of Sea
turtle populations and their habitats along the Kenyan
coastline, and promoting their integrated management.
In connection with these objectives, the project also
aims at improving education and public awareness, and
at increasing local communities' participation in turtle
management
