Ambassador
Dr Nehemiah Rotich, the former Director of the Kenyan Wildlife
Service (KWS) and thereafter Permanent Representative of Kenya
with the United Nations in Nairobi visited the Secretariats
of UNEP/CMS, AEWA, ASCOBANS and EUROBATS from 2-4 June 2003.
He held intensive consultations on the Work Programme priority
areas of these multilateral treaties and learnt about their
structural and day-to-day problems.
Ambassador Rotich is the special envoy of the UNEP Executive
Director, Dr Töpfer. He will visit all UNEP administered
Convention Secretariats to establish how UNEP’s
support can be intensified and improved, and how, if applicable,
administrative problems can be solved. The Bonn-based
Secretariats are eagerly awaiting Dr Rotich’s report
to the Executive Director, and hope that appropriate action
will be taken thereafter. The Heads of these Secretariats
(pictured above from left to right: R. Strempel, B. Lenten
and A. Müller-Helmbrecht) take this opportunity to
thank Dr Rotich for his interest in the work of the Secretariats
and the institutional and administrative problems they
are facing. They also welcome the initiative undertaken
by the Executive Director.
