| The
23rd meeting of the CMS Standing Committee will take place
in Bonn, Germany, on 13 and 14 December 2001. The Standing
Committee is one of the four main bodies of the convention.
It provides policy and administrative guidance between regular
meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP).
The Committee is comprised by nine members, with regional
representation: two members are from Europe, two from Africa,
one each from the Americas, Asia and Oceania. In addition,
both the Depository and the Party hosting the next Conference
of the Parties are represented.
The purpose of the forthcoming CMS Standing Committee meeting
is as follows:
1) The Committee will discuss
the reports of the Secretariat and of the Scientific Council
on work performed so far and will address future work plans.
2) The Committee will decide
on the preparations for the next joint meeting of the Conference
of the Parties of CMS (COP 7) and the 2nd Meeting of the
Parties of the African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA)
(MOP 2), which will take place at the invitation of the
German Federal Ministry of the Environment on 15-28 September
2002 in Bonn, Germany. The committee will provide guidance
on matters related to budget proposals, strategy / work
programmes, and other substantive matters.
3) It will also address progress
achieved since the last Conference of the Parties (Cape
Town, November 1999), inter alia:

and Petrel Agreement
· Memorandum
of Understanding on the Indian Ocean and South-East Asian
marine turtles
· Memorandum
of Understanding on the Great Bustard - Middle European
populations
· Scientific
Council
· Regional
workshop for Latin America
· Jointly
organised conference of the Bonn, Bern, and Barcelona conventions
in the Mediterranean region.
· Implementation
of the Sahelo-Saharan Antelope Action Plan
· Development
of the Action Plan for the Mediterranean Monk Seal
