After the celebration of the 20th
anniversary of the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild
Animals on 23 June 1999 in Bonn the Executive Director of
the United Nations Programme (UNEP) honoured the Secretariat
of CMS with his first official visit.
In a pleasant atmosphere Prof. Dr. Töpfer congratulated
once again the Secretariat for its tireless and successful
work for the conservation of wild animals and he encouraged
the Secretariat to make every effort to continue in this
work. In his function as Executive Director of UNEP he promised
to support the Secretariat by facilitating the administrative
work and in this way to improve the efficiency of both CMS
and UNEP. In addition, he emphasized the importance of co-operation
between CMS and other conventions and pointed out that CMS
will play furthermore a key role in the world-wide protection
of migratory animals.
The Executive Secretary, Mr. Müller-Helmbrecht, informed
Prof. Dr. Töpfer about present and future projects of CMS
and the preparations for the 6th meeting of the Conference
of the Parties in Cape Town, South Africa, in November 1999.
