CMS Family Joins UN Day Celebrations in Bonn

Bonn,
26 October 2015 - The CMS Family Secretariats joined other UN Bonn-based agencies and international organizations to celebrate the annual UN Day this weekend.

Thousands of people attended the festival on Bonn's market square in front of the city's Old Town Hall. The recently elected Lord Mayor of Bonn, Mr. Ashok Sridharan, welcomed the visitors.

This year not only marks a special jubilee for the United Nations to celebrate its 70th anniversary and highlight its achievements. It is also the year when the Sustainable Development Goals start to define the UN agenda for the coming fifteen years and beyond. A special focus is on this course of action adopted by the UN that invites all countries to join efforts for better progress in the fields of education, biodiversity, climate change and environment, among others.

The CMS Secretariat, which has been in Bonn since its establishment in 1984, shared an exhibition tent at the festival with the co-located Agreements AEWA, ASCOBANS and EUROBATS and other UN Bonn agencies.

The day was full of entertainment and activities for the whole family, including a stage program showcasing music and dance performances from around the world.

Hundreds of visitors, young and old, visited the CMS Family display throughout the day, asking questions about wild migratory animals and organizations that work to protect them. Animal posters, stickers and information booklets proved to be popular souvenirs, and many visitors were interested in taking a quiz to test their knowledge on harbour porpoises to get a tote bag from the ASCOBANS Secretariat as a reward.
