- The CMS Secretariat together with the other UN agencies based in Bonn, Berlin and Hamburg joined the City of Bonn in celebrating the annual UN Day on Saturday, 20 October. Every year in October the City of Bonn invites its citizens as well as the international community in Bonn to commemorate the adoption of the United Nations Charter in 1945. UN Day is celebrated since 1996 on Bonn’s market square.

The CMS Secretariat took the opportunity to present its work to the interested public. Together with the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA), EUROBATS and ASCOBANS, Secretariat staff offered posters, stickers and information brochures to raise awareness on migratory species and the threats they face.

An estimated 25000 visitors came to the market square on a beautiful autumn day to enjoy the entertainment and live music and to learn more about the international organizations working in their city. With this year’s theme focusing on sustainable consumption and consumer behavior visitors also learned about how each and every one of us can influence the use of resources and the reduction of waste.

UN organizations are based in Bonn since 1951 with the CMS Secretariat being established in this city in 1984. Since the 1950s, their number has been growing steadily with currently 18 agencies in Langer Eugen and Haus Carstanjen. At the end of this month, the Altes Abgeordnetenhochhaus will be handed over to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), accommodating the growing number of staff of Bonn’s biggest UN Secretariat.
