Bonn, 1 September 2016 - The world’s largest conservation event – the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Conservation Congress – will be held in Hawaii starting today and ending on 10 September. The event will bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including intergovernmental organizations, government representatives and NGOs who will be discussing solutions to the most urgent conservation issues. CMS will be participating in a number of events on subjects such as the conservation of African-Eurasian vultures, sustainable wildlife management and community-based anti-poaching measures. CMS Executive Secretary, Bradnee Chambers, will be at the IUCN World Congress and participating as speaker in a number of events.
At the event “Promoting the conservation of African-Eurasian vultures and their ecosystem services, with special reference to Africa” being organized by BirdLife International and the IUCN Vulture Specialist group, Mr. Chambers will present the contribution of CMS to preserving these birds of prey.
Vultures belong to one of the most endangered groups of vertebrates on the planet – and their population trend is declining. African-Eurasian vultures are threatened by poisoning, trade and habitat degradation. These birds of prey provide essential ecosystem services as scavengers. They feed on carcasses that would otherwise pose a disastrous threat to people through spreading diseases. Vultures inhabit vast home ranges, crossing multiple national boundaries, therefore international cooperation is key to their conservation. A panel including representatives from CITES, BirdLife International and CMS will provide an overview of the global situation of vultures as well as help raise awareness and foster political dialogue in order to promote international collaboration for the conservation of the world’s vultures.
The event will take place on Friday, 2 September at 13:00 hrs in the Species Conservation Pavilion. For more information please visit: https://portals.iucn.org/congress/session/12430
Meet and Greet with the Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management
The Collaborative Partnership on Sustainable Wildlife Management (CPW) is a group of international organizations that promote the sustainable use of wildlife resources. CPW focuses on wildlife, food security, livelihoods and human-wildlife conflict as well as illegal and unsustainable hunting. The Partnership will present its work and its latest projects on sustainable wildlife management. The aim of the event is to raise awareness on the different aspects of wildlife management and to exchange experiences on the conservation of terrestrial species. CMS is a CPW member and Mr. Chambers will participate as a speaker.
The event will take place on Saturday, 3 September at 13:00 hrs in the Species Conservation Pavilion. For more information please visit: https://portals.iucn.org/congress/session/12441
Empowering Local Communities to Combat Poaching and Illegal Wildlife Trade - What Works and Why?
Wildlife crime leads to political, economic, social and environmental instability, undermines the rule of law, destroys human livelihoods and lays waste to our natural heritage. Alongside international conventions such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES) and CMS, the involvement of local communities is key to finding an effective and sustainable solution. At this event, Mr. Chambers will be facilitating a workshop about the importance of local community involvement in fighting wildlife crime. CMS is actively involving communities to preserve large mammals in Central Asia and Africa. The CMS Executive Secretary will present four CMS case studies in Africa and Central Asia as successful examples of including local groups in a bottom-up approach. Practitioners will present their experiences, results and lessons learned.
The event will take place on Monday, 5 September at 14:30 hrs in Room 316A. For more information please visit: https://portals.iucn.org/congress/session/10269
The IUCN World Congress is held every four years. This year, the creation of strong international partnerships is being emphasized, acknowledging that groups such as consumers, producers and local communities need to be part of a solution for sustainable nature conservation.
