Equus hemionus

An international team of 92 scientists and conservationists has joined forces to create the first-ever global atlas of ungulate (hooved mammal) migrations, working in partnership with the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), a UN treaty. The detailed maps of the seasonal movements of herds worldwide will help governments, indigenous people and local communities, planners, and wildlife managers to identify current and future threats to migrations, and advance conservation measures to sustain them in the face of an expanding human footprint.

Description:

- E. h. khur–

The Asiatic wild ass (Equus hemionus) or locally referred to as Gobi khulan, Turkmen kulan, Persian onager and Indian khur is found in southern Mongolia and the adjacent northern part of China, Turkmenistan, Iran and India and has been reintroduced back to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Israel. Wild asses are smaller and slimmer than horses at about 260 kilograms and 2.1 meters (head-body length). The animal inhabits mountain steppe, steppe, semi-desert and desert plains and eats mostly grass and forbs, but can also browse from semi-shrubs, shrubs and trees. The distribution of the population is positively determined by pasture and water resources and negatively impacted upon by land conversion, livestock grazing, and poaching. During hot and dry summer months, the species is primarily found within 10 – 20 km from standing water. The estimated global population of khulan is about 55,000 individuals with 75% found in Mongolia. Herds in Mongolia can consist of >1,000 individuals. By far the largest subpopulation of khulan, estimated at about 36,000, is found in the southern Gobi. Khulan migrate in nomadic patterns, moving from site to site in a relatively unpredictable manner in search of resources (food and water). This great migrant can travel hundreds of kilometers in just a few weeks and their annual range can cover up to 70,000 km².

The major threats include habitat loss and fragmentation from linear infrastructure, competition with livestock for grazing grounds and water access, water resource depletion and illegal hunting. In Mongolia, the offtake for subsistence use and the illegal meat trade was high in the early 2000s and likely led to a temporary decline in population numbers; currently numbers appear to have stabilized, but accurately monitoring population trend over the large expanse of the population is challenging. Fenced railroads and border infrastructure have direct impact on the khulan population in Mongolia limiting its range on the eastern border. Rapidly developing mining activity and associated infrastructure, if not carefully mitigated, may further fragment the khulan’s habitat and prevent access to important resources (e.g. water) or refuges from extreme weather events. In Turkmenistan, illegal offtake may have resulted in the near loss of the population in Badkhyz which was the source for reintroductions elsewhere throughout Central Asia.

Conservation The species is listed in the CMS Appendix II and recommended for cooperative action (rapid measures to assist the conservation of species listed under Appendix II) by Resolution 11.13 of the CMS COP11. It is also covered by Central Asian Mammals Initiative (CAMI). The key activities defined in the CAMI Programme of Work (POW) include increasing scientific knowledge on khulan’s movements and migration corridors, and promoting creation of protected areas in key khulan habitats and migration routes. Additionally, it is one of the target species addressed under the CMS Guidelines on Mitigating the Impact of Linear Infrastructure and Related Disturbances on Mammals in Central Asia.

The khulan as a species is listed as near threatened by IUCN. The two subspecies Persian onager and Turkmen kulan are listed as endangered and the Gobi khulan and Indian khur as near threatened. CITES Appendix I (Gobi khulan, Indian khur) and II (Persian onager, Turkmen kulan).
