Over
sixty participants joined the Convention on Migratory Species
(CMS) and its partners
in a workshop at the IUCN
World Conservation Forum to discuss how the
conservation of migratory species builds bridges across
borders to create a sustainable future for both ecosystems
and people.
Case studies
were presented providing the foundation for participants
to learn about the existing on-the-ground conservation activities
of CMS and its partners, and their relevance to the global
sustainable development agenda.
The Workshop concluded that the transboundary
migratory range approach offered by CMS and its Agreements
can make a key contribution to ecosystem conservation, and
is a central tool for sustainable development and governance,
thus contributing to the achievement of the 2010 targets.
Workshop participants also recommended that
funders and donors recognise the legitimacy of and the benefits
offered by migratory species conservation approaches and
the need for increased financial and other support for projects
undertaken within the framework offered by CMS and its Agreements.
